Tanzania Weather
Understanding Tanzania’s weather helps you plan the perfect safari or beach holiday—and the good news is that Tanzania is a year-round destination. At Lehi Tanzania Safaris, we guide our guests through the country’s diverse climates, from warm tropical beaches to cool highland safari regions, ensuring the best experience no matter when you travel.
Coastal areas and Zanzibar enjoy warm, humid conditions throughout the year, while Northern Tanzania—including Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire—remains cooler due to higher elevation. Daytime temperatures generally range between 22°C and 31°C, with evenings becoming pleasantly cool, especially in the highlands.
Tanzania Weather by Season
Tanzania experiences two main seasons: the dry season and the rainy season.
Dry Season (June to October & January to February)
This is the most popular time to visit Tanzania. Days are sunny, rainfall is minimal, and wildlife viewing is excellent as animals gather around water sources. It’s ideal for safaris, Kilimanjaro climbs, and beach holidays.
Rainy Season (March to May & November to December)
Known as the long rains (March–May) and short rains (November–December), these periods bring refreshing showers—often in the late afternoon or overnight. The landscape transforms into lush green scenery, creating dramatic photography opportunities and fewer crowds.
Can You Travel During Tanzania’s Rainy Season?
Absolutely! In fact, many filmmakers and wildlife photographers prefer this season. During the rains, nature is at its most vibrant, wildlife is active, and the parks feel peaceful and uncrowded. Prices for lodges and safaris are also more attractive during this time.
Most Northern Circuit parks remain excellent to visit in the rainy season, including:
Serengeti National Park
Ngorongoro Crater
Tarangire National Park
Lake Manyara
Arusha National Park
Some parks in Southern Tanzania may be harder to access due to road conditions, so our team at Lehi Tanzania Safaris helps tailor the best itinerary for the season.
How Weather Influences Wildlife Viewing
Rain brings life to Tanzania’s ecosystems. With abundant food and water, animals roam freely, young are born, and predators remain active. Bird lovers especially enjoy this period, as migratory birds arrive in large numbers, adding color and diversity to the parks.
Many travelers find the rainy season offers a more intimate and authentic safari experience, with cooler temperatures and fewer vehicles at sightings.
