yellow fever requirements
Planning a trip to Tanzania and wondering about yellow fever requirements? You’re not alone. At Lehi Tanzania Safaris, we understand that health regulations can be confusing, especially when traveling internationally. The good news is that Tanzania is considered a low-risk country for yellow fever, making it a safe and welcoming destination for most travelers.
Below, we explain everything you need to know about yellow fever vaccinations, entry requirements, and what applies to your journey to Tanzania.
Do You Need a Yellow Fever Vaccine for Tanzania?
For most travelers, the answer is no. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Tanzania is not classified as a yellow fever risk country. If you are traveling directly from Europe, the United States, the UK, Australia, or other non-risk countries, a yellow fever vaccination is not required.
This means you can enter Tanzania without a yellow fever certificate, provided your travel route does not include high-risk countries.
What Is Yellow Fever?
Yellow fever is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, commonly found in parts of Africa and South America. Symptoms may appear within 3–6 days and can include fever, chills, headaches, and muscle pain. In severe cases, yellow fever can become life-threatening.
Fortunately, Tanzania remains free from active yellow fever transmission, which is why vaccination is not mandatory for most visitors.
When Is Proof of Yellow Fever Vaccination Required?
You will need to show proof of yellow fever vaccination if:
You are arriving from a country with a known yellow fever risk
You have transited for 12 hours or more through a high-risk country, even if you did not leave the airport
Countries considered high-risk do not include the USA, Canada, or most European nations. If your itinerary includes a long layover in a risk country, we strongly recommend checking with your doctor before travel.
Getting the Yellow Fever Vaccine
The yellow fever vaccine is given as a single dose, ideally at least 10 days before travel. One dose provides lifetime protection, and you’ll receive an official International Certificate of Vaccination as proof.
If a medical condition prevents you from receiving the vaccine, a doctor can issue a medical exemption letter, which is usually accepted by Tanzanian immigration authorities.
